Brace Yourself For Sports Injuries

As an active guy or sportsman, getting joint-related injuries is very common. Even less sports active people get them. When you’re injured, simple daily routines like walking down the street, sitting down and getting up can be a real pain. It’ll certainly take a big chunk of joy out of your everyday life.

Chances are, these injuries are recurrent, and further complications occur if left unattended and untreated. Fact is, painful and achy joints should be dealt with, and the sooner the better.

What are joint related injuries?
The most common joint related injuries suffered by sportsmen and active men are at the knees, elbows and ankles. Swelling may be invisible but pain will present. This inflammation is normally caused by overworked joints from repetitive movements.

How to treat it?
The most common and effective way to reduce the swelling is to apply the R.I.C.E (Rest, Ice, Compression & Elevation) treatment as soon as possible. Resting the overworked joint is a must to prevent further damage, and ice will help subside the inflammation. Resting doesn’t mean not using the joint at all, you just have to be more controlled in your movements.

Compression is very important to support the injured joint and to prevent further damage. It also helps you in faster healing. Last but not least, elevating the joint will prevent unnecessary pressure on the injury.

How does compression help?
Compression provided by sport braces support the joints which are held together by our muscle tissues. The compression given by these braces also creates heat to the injured joint and this will cause more blood to focus on the affected spot to encourage faster healing.

Post-healing compression
Even after your joint injury is healed, there’s a good chance for a recurrence as your joint is now weakened. It’s a good idea to continue applying compression when you’re back to your active sports again. You’ll get better joint support when aiming for peak performance.

Materials used in sport braces
At the moment, the most common material used in sport braces is Neoprene. This material is known for its stretching capabilities, thus minimising the resistance from the joint when it is applied. But it is not very breathable material, making it very uncomfortable for those sweaty situations during a game. This will create friction and reduce the mobility of the joint significantly. Those of you with sensitive skin may even get rashes.

It’s worth your while to get better quality sports braces that are stretchable and breathable. This will only ensure your joints are well stabilised and kept dry and warm for better comfort and peak performance.

If the problem persists
Sometimes when the injury becomes too severe, you might have to seek medical help or even go for surgery to rectify the problem. After a surgery, it will normally take months to recuperate and recover. Since it can be easily damaged again, it’s best to use braces all the time during sports to prevent injuries from recurring.

As the saying goes, prevention is better than cure. So brace yourself.

Futsal Fact Files

Futsal is said to be the worlds most played small sided sport with 25 million participants.

Jan 2004 England lost to Cyprus and Albania in Euro 2004 qualifiers. More importantly England are on the international map.

November 2003 England announce that they have accepted an invitation to take part in the 2004 European futsal Championships.

Futsal is the international version of indoor soccer. Played throughout the world by an estimated 25 million players its rules sanctioned by FIFA. Italy is estimated to have 4 million Futsal players compared to 1 million full sided players. Futsal is the No1 game in Portuguese schools and Universities. Japan has over 300.000 players and is struggling to match facilities to players.

The 2000 F.I.F.A World Championships included: Spain (winners), Holland, Portugal, Croatia, Iran, Thailand, Argentina, Egypt, Australia, Cost Rica, Cuba Guatemala (hosts), Uruguay, Brazil (previous champions and finalist) & Russia (European champions)

England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales are conspicuous by their absence. Over 70 countries now participate in the game worldwide. Countries such as Spain, Italy, Brazil and Russia have professional leagues drawing indoor crowds that would grace our First Division.

The first international championships took place in 1965. Paraguay winning the S.American Cup. Brazil won the next six through to ’79! Brazil has dominated the game since winning the Pan America Cup in ’80 and ’84 plus being World Champions three times. The first in Sao Paola, Brazil, in 1982. The second was ’85 in Spain. In Australia ’88 Paraguay took the title. Brazil regained the title in Holland ’89 and retained it in Hong Kong ‘92. Spain ’96 was yet again a Brazilian triumph. 15.000 fans saw the hosts lose 6-4. 46 teams entered that year; this has grown to 70+ teams for the next championship. From ’89 the championships were under FIFA control. But others are catching up fast with the overall standard of this exhilarating game improving all the time.

Futsal became part of FIFA in ’87. United States Futsal integrating in ’89. At this moment in time, July 2002, 110 countries are register participants within FIFA.

Futsal has grown hugely in Brazil since 1980. The growth has paralleled the loss of playing fields in the big cities. Rivalino, Zico, Juninio, Ronaldo all originate from a Futsal background. The recent FIFA World Club Championships between Vasco de Gamma and Corinthians had 18 of the 22 starters originated from Futsal.

Many Brazilian oil rigs have Futsal courts on them!!

20000 teams enter an annual tournament in Iran every year

A Russian Futsal Cup final attracted a televised record of 32 million viewers.

Over 100,000 people watched 40 matches at the 2002 futsal World Cup finals in Guatemala.

Futsal originated at the Montevideo YMCA in Uruguay in the 1930's. It was later adapted, closer to the game we see today, at a YMCA in San Paulo Brazil.

The games next big step was Rio in 1954 when the different Brazilian States unified their rules. Followed in 1974 when the International Federation of Futebol de Saláo or Fifusa was set up in Sán Paulo. In 1989 FIFA took over took over, split with Fifusa and coined the word FUTSAL. The game has worldwide expanded ever since

The Brazilian Futsal federation has registered 160.000 new players since 1991

Manoel Tobias, Brazil's most famous Futsal player is said to earn in excess of 150.000$ annually.

Brazil's first professional league started in 1996'although semi professional players existed via expenses payments before then.

Brazil is estimated to have more Futsal players than football players. The game is eulogised for the number of star footballers it has nurtured. Victor Belloss, The Guardian.

How does Futsal promote better skills and tactics?

Just watch Futsal players fight to keep the ball from crossing the touch line and you'll immediately begin to see how Futsal develops skill, control, and technique. A small field with lines puts players constantly under pressure from other players and out-of-play boundaries. Players must learn to settle the ball rapidly, cut sharply, shield effectively, pass quickly and move into space.

Compared to walled soccer, Futsal places a greater premium on ball control. There is no reward for errant passes because the other team gets the ball. There is no reward for errant shots because the other team gets the ball. There is no incentive to 'kick and run' because the field is too small and packed with players. The big –fast- speed based youth teams are limited in their advantage in Futsal. Futsal equalizes the playing field enabling “real” soccer to be played with little advantage to size or speed. Players with the ball must use proper technique to maintain control and must seek out other players in space. Players without the ball must move to 'real' space and must truly support their teammates.

A player can not “hide” in Futsal. With only 4 field players on the field and always needing the proper support positions offensively and defensively, a player will instinctively learn better spacing, passing and general tactics from playing Futsal.

With Futsal, the emphasis is clearly on control and technique. Without control and technique you cannot expect to succeed in Futsal. And, if US players are to be more successful in the international arena, it is clear that we must better train and prepare our youth on proper technique. If you are serious about skills and technique development, Futsal is the superior activity. Futsal promotes better technique and develops skills more rapidly. And if you are serious about the quality of the time you spend playing or watching soccer games, Futsal is clearly better.
